Synopsis: Delhi records its fourth CNG price hike in 15 days as rising gas procurement costs increase transportation expenses and pressure consumers, commercial operators, and urban mobility systems.

Delhi has witnessed its fourth compressed natural gas (CNG) price hike within just 15 days, with prices increasing by ₹2 per kilogram as fuel retailers continue adjusting rates amid rising input and supply costs. The latest revision has pushed CNG prices in the national capital to ₹79.70 per kg, further increasing transportation and commuting expenses for consumers and commercial vehicle operators.

The price hike was announced by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), which supplies CNG across Delhi and adjoining regions including Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram. The revised rates have already come into effect across the city’s fuel stations.

Officials cited rising procurement costs and fluctuations in domestic gas pricing as major reasons behind the repeated revisions. Analysts note that global energy market instability and increasing operational costs are continuing to impact India’s city gas distribution sector despite government efforts to stabilise fuel supplies.

The repeated increases are expected to affect auto-rickshaw drivers, cab operators, delivery services, and public transport systems that heavily rely on CNG as a relatively affordable alternative to petrol and diesel. Transport associations have expressed concerns over shrinking profit margins and rising operational expenses.

Consumers in Delhi and the National Capital Region are also likely to feel the indirect impact through higher transportation charges and delivery costs. Industry experts say frequent fuel price adjustments may reduce some of the cost advantage that CNG vehicles traditionally offered over conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

The latest hike comes at a time when households and businesses are already dealing with elevated living costs and broader inflationary pressures. Energy pricing remains sensitive due to geopolitical tensions, supply disruptions, and volatility in international gas markets.

India has been promoting CNG and cleaner fuels as part of its long-term strategy to reduce urban pollution and dependence on imported oil. However, rising gas prices are creating challenges for maintaining affordability while balancing supply economics and infrastructure investments.

Despite the recent increases, CNG continues to remain comparatively cheaper and cleaner than petrol and diesel in most Indian cities. Experts believe long-term stability in gas pricing will depend on improved domestic production, diversified energy sourcing, and expansion of gas infrastructure networks across the country.
