India Finds New Gas Zone in Rajasthan Energy Field

Synopsis:  India unlocks a new gas-bearing zone in Rajasthan’s Dandewala field, reinforcing domestic energy production and advancing national efforts to strengthen energy security, enhance fuel availability, and reduce reliance on imported resources.

State-owned Oil India Limited (OIL) has announced a significant natural gas discovery in Rajasthan’s Dandewala field, marking an important development in India’s efforts to strengthen domestic energy production and reduce dependence on imported fuel resources. The discovery is located in the Jaisalmer district and is expected to enhance the hydrocarbon potential of western Rajasthan, which has emerged as a strategically important energy region for the country.

According to the company, the exploratory well has recorded an average gas inflow of nearly 25,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD) from a depth of around 950 metres. The newly identified gas-bearing zone is situated within the shallower Sanu Formation of the Dandewala field, representing the first successful confirmation of gas presence in this geological layer within the region.

Preliminary technical assessments conducted through structural mapping, petrophysical evaluation, and subsurface analysis estimate the gas-in-place potential at nearly 75 million standard cubic metres (MMSCM). Industry experts indicate that the discovery could open new exploration opportunities in the basin and encourage further appraisal drilling to evaluate the commercial viability and scale of the reserves.

Oil India states that the discovery validates its strategy of reassessing mature and existing fields through focused technical interventions and advanced subsurface studies. The company has increasingly adopted a “missed opportunities” exploration approach aimed at unlocking untapped reserves in previously explored areas. Analysts believe this strategy could significantly improve production efficiency while reducing development costs by leveraging existing infrastructure and operational networks.

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri describe the discovery as a major boost for India’s domestic energy sector. The development comes at a time when India is seeking to improve energy self-sufficiency amid global supply uncertainties and rising import costs. Increased domestic natural gas production is expected to support industrial demand, city gas distribution networks, and regional power generation infrastructure.

The Rajasthan basin remains one of India’s most promising hydrocarbon regions, with multiple operators continuing exploration activities across oil and gas blocks. Experts believe discoveries such as the Dandewala reserve will strengthen India’s long-term energy security strategy while supporting the government’s objective of expanding cleaner fuel usage across industries and households.
