India is strengthening its strategic engagement with Gulf nations as National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held high-level discussions with Saudi leadership, underscoring New Delhi’s proactive diplomatic outreach amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

During his visit to Saudi Arabia, Doval engaged with senior officials to deepen cooperation on security, energy, and regional stability. The talks focused on enhancing coordination in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and addressing evolving security challenges in the region.

A major driver behind the engagement is the ongoing instability in West Asia, particularly its impact on energy supply chains and maritime security routes critical to India’s economic interests. Both sides discussed ways to ensure stability in key corridors such as the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for global oil flows and India’s energy imports.

The dialogue also reflects India’s broader “Gulf strategy”, which prioritises stronger ties with key regional partners like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar. These relationships are central to India’s energy security, trade, and diaspora interests, with Saudi Arabia remaining one of India’s largest crude oil suppliers.

Beyond security, the discussions explored expanding cooperation in defence, economic partnerships, and regional connectivity, aligning with the deepening India–Saudi strategic partnership. The engagement builds on sustained high-level exchanges between the two countries, signaling continuity in bilateral cooperation.

From a strategic standpoint, the visit highlights India’s intent to play a more active role in shaping regional stability in West Asia while safeguarding its economic and energy interests. It also reinforces a multi-alignment approach, where India engages diverse partners to navigate complex geopolitical dynamics.

Overall, Doval’s engagement with Saudi leadership reflects a calibrated diplomatic push to strengthen security cooperation, stabilise energy linkages, and expand strategic partnerships in a volatile but critical region.
