Govt Gets 70 Applications for ₹23,000 Cr Electronics Scheme: Vaishnaw
- Govt receives 70 applications under ₹23,000-crore electronics scheme in just 15 days.
- 80% of applicants are small and medium enterprises, says Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
- Scheme targets reducing electronic component imports; major players like Tata, Foxconn show interest.
The government has received a strong response to its ₹22,805-crore Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), with 70 applications submitted within just 15 days of the scheme’s launch. Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, shared the update, noting that a majority of the applicants are small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
“Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme has received tremendous response. Within 15 days of opening the application, around 70 applications have come,” Vaishnaw told PTI.
While the minister did not disclose specific names of applicants, sources have previously indicated that major players like Tata Electronics, Dixon Technologies, and Foxconn have expressed interest in the scheme.
Vaishnaw highlighted the overwhelming participation from smaller firms: “80 percent of the applications have come from small and medium enterprises,” he said.
The ECMS was launched on May 1 to address the growing demand-supply gap in India’s electronic components sector. According to the Electronic Industries Association of India (Elcina), this deficit could soar to USD 248 billion (around ₹21 lakh crore) by 2030, driven by a projected USD 500 billion electronics production target. Without government intervention, this gap would largely be met through imports.

Of the total ₹22,805 crore outlay, ₹21,093 crore has been allocated for sub-assemblies such as camera modules, multi-layered printed circuit boards (PCBs), flexible PCBs, and passive components mounted on PCBs using machines. The remaining ₹1,712 crore is designated for the manufacture of parts used in these sub-assemblies and capital goods essential for electronics production.
The scheme classifies display module and camera module sub-assembly in Category A, while category B products include bare components like non-surface mount devices (non-SMD), multi-layered printed circuit board, lithium-ion cells for digital applications, enclosures for mobile, IT hardware products and related devices. Category C includes components like flexible PCB, SMD passive components.
Besides, components used in making items listed under A, B and C categories as well as capital goods used in electronics manufacturing have been clubbed under D category.
The application window for categories A, B, and C will remain open for three months from May 1, while applications for category D can be submitted over a two-year period.
