India Emerges Top Smartphone Supplier to US; Electronics Rs 12 L Cr
- India is now the top U.S. smartphone supplier; electronics manufacturing hits ₹12 lakh crore
- Mobile production soars from 2 units in 2014 to 300+, with 99.2% made in India
- Three new Vande Bharat trains launched, total now 150 nationwide
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced recently that India is now the largest supplier of smartphones to the US, with electronics manufacturing valued at ₹12 lakh crore. While inaugurating Metro projects in Bengaluru, he mentioned that electronic production had increased six-fold in the past eleven years.
He also pointed to a large increase in electronic exports which have increased eight-fold to ₹3 lakh crore. Vaishnaw also reiterated that India is the second-largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world.
He said, and as shown in this area of technology production, India is committed to becoming a global manufacturing hub for technology production, where advanced electronics can be made widely available, and support the Prime Minister’s vision for Inclusivity in access to technology.
"Our electronic production has grown 6 times in the last 11 years. Today, electronics manufacturing has touched 12 lakh crore rupees. Electronic exports have increased by 8 times... Today, it has grown to 3 lakh crore rupees. India has become the second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world", the minister added.

Government statistics bring forth this transformation. In 2014, India had only two units manufacturing mobile devices, whereas there are now over 300. In 2014, only 26% of mobile phones sold in India were made domestically, mostly because they were imported.
Today, 99.2% of the mobile phones sold in India are made domestically. The value of mobile phone manufacturing, has seen its value rise from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to ₹4,22,000 crore in FY24.
Vaishnaw also indicated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, then inaugurated three new Vande Bharat trains Ajni (Nagpur)-Pune, KSR Bengaluru-Belagavi, and Shree Mata Vaishnodevi Katra-Amritsar, when they were flagged off from KSR Bengaluru Railway Station.
With these three launches, the number of Vande Bharat trains in India now stands at 150 (75 pairs). The number of Vande Bharat trains strengthens India's further modern rail network development in addition to technological manufacturing capability.
