India, EU Discuss Power Cooperation, Energy Security

India and the EU discuss power-sector cooperation covering energy security, low-carbon development, nuclear energy, carbon markets, energy storage, smart grids and emerging technologies.

India and the European Union have discussed ways to deepen cooperation in the power sector, with talks covering energy security, low-carbon development, nuclear energy, carbon markets and emerging technologies.

Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy Shripad Naik held a bilateral meeting with a delegation from the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) in New Delhi on September 24. The meeting reviewed existing cooperation and explored areas for greater technological and institutional engagement between India and the EU.

The discussions included the transformation of the power sector and measures to strengthen energy security while supporting the transition towards lower-carbon energy systems. Nuclear energy, carbon markets and the development of new technologies were also identified as areas for continued cooperation.

Naik highlighted India's efforts to develop a resilient and future-ready power system. According to the Ministry of Power, India has expanded its non-fossil fuel capacity ahead of its Nationally Determined Contribution targets while continuing to strengthen transmission and distribution infrastructure. The country is also advancing energy storage, smart-grid solutions, nuclear energy, energy efficiency and green hydrogen.

Energy storage and smart-grid technologies are becoming increasingly important as India expands renewable power generation and manages changing electricity demand. Cooperation with European institutions could support exchanges on technology, policy frameworks and institutional practices in these areas.

The discussions also build on the broader India-EU Clean Energy and Climate Partnership, established in 2016. The partnership provides a framework for cooperation on renewable energy, energy efficiency, regional connectivity and energy security, while supporting joint projects and research.

The India-EU joint statement issued in January 2026 also called for stronger cooperation on smart grids, energy storage, electricity-sector regulation and energy and climate diplomacy. It proposed reactivating the Joint Working Group on Energy Security and advancing collaboration on green hydrogen, wind energy, sustainable mobility and other clean-energy areas.

Both sides reaffirmed the importance of continued engagement and knowledge exchange to support secure, resilient and sustainable energy systems. The latest meeting adds to ongoing India-EU cooperation as both sides work on energy security alongside the development and deployment of lower-carbon technologies.
