India Plans $2 Billion Military Drone Procurement Drive

India is preparing to undertake its largest military drone procurement program to date, with plans to acquire more than $2 billion worth of drones from domestic manufacturers. The proposed purchase reflects the country's growing focus on unmanned systems and is expected to significantly boost India's indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem. The procurement plans are reportedly in advanced stages and could be executed through a fast-track acquisition process to meet urgent operational requirements.

The proposed orders are expected to exceed ₹17,000 crore and mark a substantial increase from recent tactical drone procurements. Industry estimates suggest that deliveries could take place within the next 18 to 24 months, highlighting the urgency with which the armed forces are seeking to strengthen their drone capabilities. The move follows the increasing prominence of drones in modern warfare and their growing role in intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, logistics, and precision-strike operations.

India's renewed emphasis on military drones has been shaped by lessons from recent regional and global conflicts, where unmanned aerial systems have demonstrated their effectiveness as force multipliers. The planned procurement also aligns with the country's broader strategy of enhancing defence preparedness while reducing dependence on imported military equipment.

Government initiatives promoting domestic manufacturing, streamlined procurement processes, and increased support for innovation have helped create a favorable environment for the drone industry. Measures such as faster acquisition procedures, expanded opportunities for private firms, and programs supporting indigenous technology development have encouraged investment and production across the sector.

The planned procurement underscores India's commitment to modernizing its armed forces while strengthening its self-reliance in defence technology. If finalized, the order would represent a major milestone for the country's defence industry and further establish drones as a central component of India's future military capabilities.
