Synopsis: India and Vietnam sign a landmark BrahMos missile agreement, strengthening bilateral defence cooperation, enhancing Vietnam’s maritime security capabilities, and advancing India’s growing role as a key defence exporter in the Indo-Pacific region.

India and Vietnam have signed a landmark agreement for the supply of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, marking a significant milestone in defence cooperation between the two countries and strengthening strategic ties in the Indo-Pacific region. The deal is expected to enhance Vietnam’s maritime defence capabilities while expanding India’s footprint as a major defence exporter.

The agreement was finalized during high-level engagements between officials from both nations and reflects growing collaboration in defence, security, and strategic affairs. The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by BrahMos Aerospace, is regarded as one of the world's fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles and has become a key component of India’s defence export strategy.

Vietnam becomes one of the few countries to acquire the BrahMos system, following the Philippines' earlier purchase. Defence analysts believe the acquisition will significantly strengthen Vietnam’s deterrence and coastal defence capabilities, particularly in the strategically important South China Sea region. The missile system is capable of engaging both land and sea-based targets with high precision and speed.

The deal aligns with India’s broader efforts to deepen defence partnerships with Southeast Asian nations under its Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific strategy. Over the years, India and Vietnam have steadily expanded cooperation in naval exchanges, military training, defence industry collaboration, cybersecurity, and maritime security.

Beyond defence, both countries continue to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties through trade, investment, energy cooperation, and connectivity initiatives. India has increasingly positioned itself as a reliable defence and technology partner for countries seeking to diversify their security relationships and strengthen indigenous defence capabilities.

Experts view the BrahMos agreement as a strategic development that reinforces bilateral trust and highlights India's growing role in regional security architecture. The deal is also expected to support India's ambitions of becoming a major global defence manufacturing and export hub under the “Make in India” initiative.

The agreement comes amid heightened geopolitical activity in the Indo-Pacific, where countries are seeking stronger defence partnerships and enhanced maritime security capabilities to safeguard regional stability and freedom of navigation.
