PM's UAE Visit to Boost Strategic Defence Partnership
- Modi visit strengthens India UAE strategic defence cooperation
- Partnership expands across cybersecurity, defence technology, and innovation
- Bilateral ties deepen amid rising regional geopolitical tensions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the United Arab Emirates is expected to further strengthen the rapidly expanding strategic and defence partnership between the two countries. The brief stopover, scheduled during the Prime Minister’s broader Europe tour, comes at a time when India and the UAE are deepening cooperation across defence, security, technology, and regional stability.
A major focus of the visit will be advancing the proposed India-UAE Strategic Defence Partnership framework, discussions for which formally began earlier this year during UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to India. At that time, both nations signed a Letter of Intent aimed at creating a long-term framework for enhanced defence collaboration.
The proposed partnership is expected to expand bilateral cooperation in areas such as defence manufacturing, defence innovation, cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, military training, and advanced defence technologies. Officials from both countries have increasingly emphasised joint development and co-production opportunities as part of broader efforts to diversify strategic cooperation beyond traditional trade and energy sectors.

India and the UAE have significantly strengthened bilateral relations over the past decade, with ties elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2017. Defence cooperation has steadily expanded through regular military exercises, high-level defence dialogues, and maritime security collaboration. Both nations also share growing interests in maintaining regional stability and protecting critical trade and energy corridors.
The visit also takes place amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia, including recent attacks on infrastructure in the UAE. Prime Minister Modi had earlier condemned attacks targeting civilians and strategic infrastructure in the Gulf nation, reaffirming India’s support for peace and regional stability.
Apart from defence, discussions are expected to cover trade, technology, artificial intelligence, connectivity, energy security, and investment cooperation. Bilateral trade between India and the UAE has crossed $100 billion, with both countries aiming to double the figure to $200 billion by 2032 under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Industry experts view the visit as another important step in transforming India-UAE ties into a broader strategic alliance that combines economic integration with defence and technological cooperation. As both countries increasingly align on regional and global issues, the partnership is emerging as one of India’s most significant relationships in West Asia.
