India and Jamaica have agreed to deepen their economic engagement by strengthening trade ties and enhancing cooperation in skilled workforce mobility, marking a significant step in bilateral relations. The announcement was made during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s official visit to Kingston, where he held discussions with Jamaica’s leadership.

During the high-level talks, both countries reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and identified new areas for collaboration. A key outcome was the mutual commitment to expand trade, investment, and business linkages, with India recognizing Jamaica’s growing importance as a logistics hub and gateway to the Caribbean region.

A major focus of the discussions was facilitating the mobility of skilled professionals. Both sides explored opportunities for recruitment and exchange of talent, particularly in sectors such as healthcare and education, including nurses, teachers, and technical professionals. This initiative is expected to address workforce gaps while strengthening people-to-people connections between the two nations.

The visit also resulted in the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering areas such as health cooperation, solar energy initiatives, and broadcasting. Additionally, both countries discussed the effective implementation of existing agreements related to digital transformation, cultural exchange, sports, and digital payments, ensuring tangible outcomes from bilateral engagements.

Beyond trade and workforce mobility, the two nations explored expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including defence and security, agriculture, infrastructure, education, and digitization. Development partnership remains a key pillar, with India extending support for Jamaica’s recovery efforts following recent natural disasters and exploring initiatives such as an artisan empowerment hub.

The discussions also reinforced collaboration in multilateral forums, with both countries aligning on issues such as climate justice, the Global South agenda, and counter-terrorism. India acknowledged Jamaica’s support for its candidature for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council.

Overall, the engagement highlights a renewed push to strengthen India’s presence in the Caribbean while fostering mutually beneficial economic and strategic partnerships.
