India to Get Fourth S-400 Unit from Russia Next Month
- India to receive fourth S-400 missile system soon
- Delivery strengthens air defence against aerial threats
- Additional five units approved to expand defence capability
India is set to receive the fourth unit of the S-400 Triumf air defence missile system from Russia in early May 2026, further strengthening its air defence capabilities amid evolving regional security dynamics.
The S-400 system, considered one of the most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile platforms globally, is a critical component of India’s layered air defence network. The upcoming delivery follows a $5 billion deal signed in 2018, under which India is procuring five units from Russia. So far, three systems have already been inducted, with the fourth now route and the final unit expected later this year.
According to defence sources, the fourth system has already been shipped and is expected to arrive within weeks. Its induction will enhance the Indian Air Force’s ability to detect, track, and neutralise a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, and ballistic missiles, over long distances.

The S-400 systems have played a significant operational role in recent military engagements, demonstrating their effectiveness in strengthening India’s defensive posture. Their deployment across strategic locations has been aimed at covering sensitive regions.
In parallel, India is also expanding its air defence arsenal. The government recently cleared a proposal to procure five additional S-400 units, which would take the total number of systems to ten, reflecting a long-term commitment to advanced air defence infrastructure.
Despite earlier concerns over potential U.S. sanctions under CAATSA for purchasing Russian defence equipment, India has continued with the programme. Officials indicate that the additional procurement will likely be treated as a follow-on order, reducing the risk of new sanctions-related complications.
Overall, the delivery of the fourth S-400 unit marks another step in India’s efforts to build a robust, multi-layered air defence system, enhancing preparedness against aerial threats while reinforcing strategic defence partnerships with Russia.
