India Plans $3B Investment In Air Connectivity
- Cabinet clears $3B regional air connectivity scheme.
- Focus on linking smaller cities and remote areas.
- Subsidies to airlines to boost regional flights.
India's Union Cabinet has given a nod to a fresh regional air connectivity scheme with a budget of $3 billion, the primary objective of which is to enlarge aviation facilities in underserved and remote areas, at the same time strengthening India's overall air transport network.
The scheme is an extension of the current UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) initiative, which primarily aims at making air travel cost-effective and available to all. The new phase of this scheme is expected to connect smaller cities and remote areas, thereby facilitating regional movement and economic integration.
Through the scheme, the government will offer monetary inducements and subsidies to airlines who operate flights in less lucrative segments in terms of commercial viability. The support will also extend to the development of infrastructural facilities in smaller airports and airstrips, many of which are still without regular flight services.

The project further intends to improve last-mile connectivity, thereby connecting tier-2 and tier-3 cities with major economic centers. Besides enhancing accessibility, the scheme is also likely to encourage tourism, commerce and regional development, especially in those parts which have so far remained largely disconnected.
Those airlines that join this initiative are set to get viability gap funding (VGF) support in order to subsidize their running costs and at the same time promote continuous operations on regional routes. Besides, the authorities also intend to make the regulatory framework simpler so that it is easier to approve routes and build infrastructures.
The decision is taken against the backdrop of India's aviation industry which is performing well with air passenger demand rising and domestic airlines increasing their fleets. Enhancing regional connectivity is regarded as a major factor in keeping the industry growing as well as in broadening growth across different areas. On the whole, this scheme is a part of India's efforts to develop a broader and more inclusive aviation sector, enhancing access and at the same time fostering economic development in less advantaged regions.
