Indonesia Eyes Modi Visit Amid Indo-Pacific Partnership
Synopsis: Indonesia anticipates Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Jakarta as both nations seek to deepen strategic, maritime and economic cooperation while strengthening their shared Indo-Pacific vision.
India and Indonesia are set to elevate their strategic partnership as Jakarta prepares to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi on an upcoming visit that is expected to reinforce cooperation across the Indo-Pacific region. The visit comes at a time when both countries are expanding their diplomatic, economic and security engagement in response to evolving regional dynamics.
The groundwork for the visit is laid during the 8th India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting held in New Delhi, where Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations. Indonesia views Modi’s visit as a significant opportunity to inject fresh momentum into the partnership and translate shared objectives into tangible outcomes that benefit both nations.
Discussions between the two sides cover a broad range of sectors under the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Key areas of focus include defence cooperation, maritime security, trade, digital connectivity, critical minerals, healthcare, infrastructure development and people-to-people exchanges. Both countries also examine opportunities to strengthen collaboration in emerging sectors such as fintech, pharmaceuticals, tourism, education and cultural engagement.

The growing convergence between New Delhi and Jakarta is particularly evident in the maritime domain. Since the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018, the two nations have steadily enhanced cooperation aimed at promoting stability, connectivity and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. The India-Indonesia Shared Vision on Maritime Cooperation continues to serve as a cornerstone of this relationship, reflecting their common commitment to a free, open and inclusive regional order.
The meeting also underscores the importance of closer coordination in regional and multilateral forums, including engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Both ministers exchange views on regional developments and explore ways to deepen cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
Officials regard Modi’s forthcoming visit, which is expected to be part of a broader regional tour, as an important diplomatic opportunity to strengthen India’s Indo-Pacific outreach. The visit is expected to further expand economic ties, maritime cooperation and strategic coordination between two of the region’s most influential democracies, reinforcing their role in shaping the future of the Indo-Pacific.
