Defence Minister Starts Vietnam, Korea Security Visit
Synopsis: Rajnath Singh begins visits to Vietnam and South Korea to strengthen military cooperation, defence industry partnerships, and Indo-Pacific maritime security collaboration.
Rajnath Singh has begun an official visit to Vietnam and South Korea aimed at strengthening military cooperation, defence industrial partnerships, and maritime collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region. The visit reflects India’s broader strategy to deepen strategic engagement with key Asian partners amid evolving regional security dynamics.
During the multi-nation tour, Singh is expected to hold high-level meetings with defence and government officials in both countries to discuss expanding bilateral defence ties, joint military exercises, defence technology cooperation, and regional security coordination. In a statement shared before departure, Singh said the visit would focus on “deepening strategic military cooperation” and enhancing maritime collaboration to promote peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
In Vietnam, discussions are expected to centre on strengthening existing defence agreements, naval cooperation, defence production, and maritime security initiatives in the South China Sea region. India and Vietnam have significantly expanded defence ties in recent years through defence credit lines, training programmes, port visits, submarine rescue cooperation, and defence industry collaboration.

The visit follows recent high-level engagements between India and Vietnam, including talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vietnamese leadership earlier this month. Both countries reaffirmed defence and security cooperation as a core pillar of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and agreed to strengthen collaboration in emerging defence technologies and military procurement.
In South Korea, Singh is expected to discuss defence manufacturing, supply-chain resilience, emerging technologies, and strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. India and South Korea have been expanding defence industrial partnerships, particularly in areas such as artillery systems, shipbuilding, aerospace, electronics, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
Both nations are also expected to explore stronger institutional security dialogues and greater cooperation in critical technologies and economic security frameworks. Analysts noted that India is increasingly strengthening partnerships with Indo-Pacific nations to support a rules-based maritime order and diversify defence cooperation amid rising geopolitical uncertainties.
Experts believe the visit highlights India’s growing focus on defence diplomacy and strategic balancing in the Indo-Pacific, where maritime security, technology partnerships, and supply-chain resilience are becoming increasingly important geopolitical priorities.
