Kiren Rijiju Meets Serbia Leaders to Strengthen India-Serbia Ties

Kiren Rijiju met Serbian PM Duro Macut and Foreign Minister Marko Duric in Belgrade to discuss strengthening India-Serbia relations. Talks covered deeper bilateral cooperation, trade, investment, technology and shared interests, alongside the 65th NAM anniversary.

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju met Serbian Prime Minister Duro Macut and Foreign Minister Marko Duric in Belgrade to discuss ways to further strengthen the longstanding relationship between India and Serbia. The meetings focused on deepening bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest.

Rijiju, who is leading the Indian delegation in Serbia, held discussions with Prime Minister Macut at the Palace of Serbia. Both sides exchanged views on strengthening their close and enduring ties, which are based on mutual respect, friendship and shared interests.

Earlier, Rijiju met Foreign Minister Marko Duric and reviewed the longstanding friendship between the two countries. The discussions explored opportunities to expand bilateral relations and cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Economic cooperation, including trade and investment, as well as emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and digital technologies, offer potential for further engagement.

The meetings took place during Rijiju’s participation in the High-Level Commemorative Meeting marking the 65th anniversary of the First Conference of Heads of State or Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The meeting is being held in Belgrade from August 31 to September 1 under the theme “The Legacy of Non-Alignment: Lessons for Today’s World.”

India and Serbia share a long history of diplomatic engagement and were connected through the founding of the Non-Aligned Movement. India remains committed to the principles of NAM, which brings together 121 developing countries. The commemorative meeting provides an opportunity for participating nations to discuss the movement’s continuing relevance in the current global environment.

During his visit, Rijiju also paid floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Belgrade and interacted with members of the Indian community, acknowledging their contribution to strengthening India-Serbia relations.

The latest engagements underline the shared interest of India and Serbia in expanding their partnership beyond traditional diplomatic ties. Greater cooperation in trade, investment, technology sector and other emerging sectors could provide new opportunities for businesses and institutions in both countries.

The discussions therefore mark another step towards strengthening India-Serbia relations while reinforcing the historical friendship and shared diplomatic interests between the two nations.
