Modi and Putin Discuss Maritime Trade and Seafarer Safety

PM Modi and Vladimir Putin discussed maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers affected by conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea. They also reviewed India-Russia cooperation in trade, defence, energy and other strategic sectors.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers affected by conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region during their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.

The leaders reviewed the progress of the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, covering areas including defence, energy, trade partnership, space, mobility and people-to-people ties. They also took note of the outcomes of the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic and Cultural Cooperation held in Moscow on August 24.

Maritime security emerged as an important concern amid ongoing conflicts that have disrupted shipping routes and increased risks for commercial vessels and seafarers. The discussions highlighted the need to safeguard maritime trade and ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals working on international vessels.

The two leaders also exchanged views on major geopolitical developments, including the conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India's position that dialogue and diplomacy remain essential for resolving conflicts and expressed support for efforts aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine.

India has been closely monitoring the security situation affecting its maritime workforce. The Directorate General of Shipping has issued advisories for Indian seafarers amid heightened security risks in the Gulf region, including the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters.

The meeting also underlined the continued importance of India-Russia cooperation in maintaining stable trade and supply chains amid geopolitical uncertainty. Both sides agreed to remain engaged to further strengthen bilateral ties.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to welcome President Putin to India for the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13, 2026, providing another opportunity for the two countries to discuss strategic, economic and global issues.
