  • L&T Heavy Engineering partnered with Holtec Asia to design and build heat transfer systems for power plants
  • Builds on their joint work on Holtec’s SMR-300 reactor under US DOE authorization
  • Aims to enhance efficiency, reliability, and clean energy solutions

Larsen & Toubro and Holtec International are advancing nuclear technology through innovative heat transfer solutions, promoting clean energy, and strengthening the India-US partnership in nuclear innovation.

Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Heavy Engineering division has shared that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Holtec Asia, the regional division of US-based Holtec International, to co-design and manufacture heat transfer equipment for both nuclear and thermal power plants.

The MoU reinforces the companies’ existing relationship and follows the companies working together on the international deployment of Holtec’s SMR-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR). This is all made possible by the 810 Authorization granted to L&T from the US Department of Energy, giving them the ability to work with US entities on nuclear technology.

The statement read, "The strategic collaboration will combine L&T’s world-class nuclear manufacturing capabilities and Holtec’s pioneering design expertise to deliver cutting-edge solutions for nuclear and thermal power plants worldwide, especially heat transfer solutions for conventional power plant islands and balance-of-plant systems".

Together, L&T and Holtec are looking to develop pioneering heat transfer solutions that will improve thermal efficiency, performance, and operational reliability. This relationship underlines the commitment of both companies to developing energy solutions that are sustainable, efficient, and secure in the context of the global transition toward lower-carbon power generation.

Anil Parab, Whole-time Director and Senior EVP – Heavy Engineering & CE & IPDD, L&T added, "Post the COVID pandemic, energy security emerged as a strategic need, with more than 32 countries having committed to triple their nuclear power generation capacity. Our partnership with Holtec is a key strategic move to fast-track efficient energy systems and shape a sustainable energy future for both India and the world".
