Modi, Dutch PM Discuss Boosting Strategic Partnership
- India, Netherlands aim to deepen strategic partnership
- Focus on trade, defence, and innovation collaboration
- West Asia crisis discussed with economic implications
During a telephone talk, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Rob Jetten exchanged ideas on strengthening the strategic partnership between India and the Netherlands with a special focus on increasing cooperation in sectors like trade, defence and innovation.
It was right after Jetten entered office that this initiative from both leaders took place, which intends to build the initial momentum in bilateral relations. Both leaders exchanged views on the present state of the relations that have been growing continuously in different fields such as economic development, water management, technology cooperation and sustainable development.
The Netherlands is still considered one of India's major European partners. Their relationship is largely supported by trade and investment which continue to grow. The conversation mainly revolved around seeking new avenues to deepen collaboration in emerging and strategic technologies. Besides defence cooperation, the innovation ecosystem and technology partnerships were seen as the main cornerstones for future engagement.

Besides that, the talk was in line with the larger India - European Union economic framework, especially after those recent developments on the Free Trade Agreement, which is expected to enlarge economic integration and improve market access between India and other European countries.
The leaders also exchanged views on global developments, including ongoing crisis in West Asia and its wider economic implications. They shared concern that geopolitical instability can affect energy markets, supply chains, and overall global economic conditions. Both sides stressed that it is crucial to have closer international coordination and stronger bilateral cooperation if we are to navigate these challenges effectively.
Strategically speaking, the meeting can be interpreted as a sign that there is a renewed desire to raise India-Netherlands relations to the level of a comprehensive partnership, not only by focusing on traditional areas such trade, but also on innovation and sustainability that represent new frontiers. The talk also paved the way for next high-level meetings, with Jetten declaring his willingness to invite Modi to the Netherlands, which would serve to deepen bilateral cooperation.
