  • Murata’s new Tamil Nadu facility to package and distribute MLCCs for electronics, EVs, and aerospace.
  • Supports the state’s electronics manufacturing cluster, a hub for PCB assembly to product integration.
  • Expansion in India to help reduce Japan’s MLCC production share from 60% to 50%.

Japanese electronics maker Murata Manufacturing has launched production at its first Indian facility, located in the OneHub Chennai Industrial Park in Tamil Nadu, according to Moneycontrol.

The 3,500-square-metre facility will package and distribute multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), utilized in smartphones, electric vehicles, industrial machinery, and NASA’s Mars helicopter.

Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa welcomed the company's investment, noting that it supports the state’s goals in electronics manufacturing. He pointed out that Chennai and its neighboring districts constitute one of Asia's cohesive electronics manufacturing services clusters, encompassing skills from printed circuit board assembly to complete product integration.

Murata, a key supplier for Apple and other companies including Samsung and Sony, presently manufactures approximately 60 percent of its MLCC production in Japan. The firm anticipates this share will decrease to 50 percent as it grows its capacity globally, particularly in India.

Established in 1944 and based in Kyoto, Murata produces ceramic-based passive components and electronic solutions, such as inductors, EMI filters, RF modules, piezo sensors, power supplies, and industrial automation products. It announced revenue of $11.36 billion for FY2023 and has approximately 73,000 employees worldwide.

The new facility emerges alongside increasing global demand for electronics in areas such as smartphones, electric vehicles, healthcare, and industrial systems. In June 2025, Murata commenced mass production of the first MLCC in the world sized 0805 inches.

The firm runs 24 subsidiaries in Japan and 52 abroad, which include locations in India, China, the Americas, and Europe, and is traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
