  • Ghadames Basin shows strong hydrocarbon production potential
  • Discovery strengthens India’s global energy exploration strategy

Oil India has announced a significant oil and gas discovery in Libya’s Ghadames Basin, marking a major milestone in its international exploration portfolio and reinforcing India’s growing presence in global energy assets.

The discovery was made in collaboration with Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) and other consortium partners, as part of ongoing exploration efforts in the hydrocarbon-rich Ghadames Basin, one of North Africa’s most promising energy regions. The basin spans parts of Libya, Algeria, and Tunisia and is known for its substantial oil and gas reserves.

According to initial assessments, the discovery has yielded notable volumes of natural gas along with condensate, indicating strong commercial potential. Similar exploration in the basin has demonstrated production rates of around 13 million cubic feet of gas per day and over 300 barrels of condensate daily, highlighting the region’s viability for sustained extraction.

This development is strategically significant for Oil India, as it strengthens the company’s upstream portfolio beyond domestic fields and aligns with India’s broader goal of securing overseas energy resources. The company has been actively expanding its global footprint, particularly in Africa and other resource-rich regions, to diversify supply sources and reduce dependence on imports.

For Libya, the discovery adds momentum to its efforts to revive and expand its oil and gas sector, which remains the backbone of its economy, contributing over 95% of national revenue. The country has been actively encouraging foreign participation and restarting exploration activities after years of disruption due to political instability.

The Ghadames Basin, in particular, has witnessed renewed exploration interest in recent years, with multiple discoveries by international energy companies. These developments indicate a broader resurgence in Libya’s hydrocarbon sector and its potential to attract sustained global investment.

Overall, Oil India’s discovery not only enhances its global exploration credentials but also underscores the importance of international collaboration in unlocking new energy resources. As global demand for oil and gas continues alongside the energy transition, such discoveries are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring supply security and supporting long-term energy strategies.
