Piyush Goyal to Visit US for G20 Trade Talks and FTA Push

Piyush Goyal is set to visit the US for the G20 trade ministerial, where India-US FTA negotiations are expected to feature alongside efforts to advance key trade agreements with major global partners.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is scheduled to visit the United States later this month to participate in the G20 Trade and Investment Ministerial Meeting in Milwaukee. The two-day meeting begins on September 30 under the US presidency of the G20 and brings together trade ministers from major economies to discuss global commerce and economic cooperation.

During the visit, Goyal is expected to hold bilateral discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal confirms that a bilateral meeting between the two ministers is being worked out, with broader India-US trade relations expected to feature prominently in the discussions.

The ongoing negotiations for an India-US bilateral trade agreement are expected to be a key part of the agenda. The two countries continue to work towards resolving outstanding issues and identifying a way forward on the proposed trade pact. The upcoming ministerial engagement provides an opportunity to review the negotiations at a senior political level and discuss areas where further progress is required.

India is simultaneously advancing its trade engagement with other major economies. The India-European Union Free Trade Agreement is expected to move towards formal signing before the end of 2026. The European Commission has already forwarded the agreement to the European Council for approval, marking an important procedural step towards its conclusion.

The government is also pursuing a broader strategy of expanding India's global trade footprint through multiple free trade agreements. Recent policy discussions emphasise greater utilisation of existing FTAs and deeper integration of Indian businesses into international markets. India has also implemented the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, adding another major market access arrangement to its trade portfolio.

Goyal's participation in the G20 meeting therefore comes at a significant stage for India's trade diplomacy. Discussions with the US, alongside progress with the EU and other partners, are expected to support India's efforts to expand exports, improve market access and strengthen its position in global trade.
