ReNew Power, a prominent green energy firm, plans to invest Rs 22,000 crore to create India's largest renewable energy facility in Andhra Pradesh, signaling its comeback to the state after five years. ReNew plans to establish a solar energy plant with a capacity of 1,800 megawatts and a wind facility of 1,000 MW, along with a battery energy storage system (BESS) of 2 gigawatt hours (GWh) in two phases at Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The firm will additionally establish a 100-kilometre extra-high voltage (EVH) line for transporting the renewable energy. The project's groundbreaking is scheduled for May 16, and it is expected that Nara Lokesh, the Minister for Information Technology, Electronics, Communications, and Human Resources Development in the Andhra Pradesh government, will be present.

In the initial stage, ReNew plans to establish a 587 MW solar facility and a 250.8 MW wind project, along with a 415 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), they noted, mentioning that the additional capacity will be developed in later phases.

This would represent the biggest renewable energy facility in India. The government of Andhra Pradesh sanctioned the initiatives under the new integrated clean energy policy introduced in October 2024.

In 2019, the Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy administration state-mandated a reassessment of all electricity tariff contracts established with renewable energy firms. The renegotiation of the power purchase agreements (PPAs) jeopardized approximately 5.2 GW of solar and wind power initiatives in the state.
