Sonowal Reviews Safety Measures for Indian Seafarers

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has reviewed safety measures for Indian seafarers amid rising geopolitical tensions, directing stronger inter-agency coordination, enhanced monitoring, and round-the-clock support to protect mariners in conflict-sensitive regions.

Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has undertaken a thorough review of the safety and well-being of the Indian seafarers working on merchant ships sailing through conflict-prone areas, emphasizing the need for better coordination so that their needs are met without fail in the face of growing tension in geopolitics. This is yet another instance where the Government of India has shown its commitment to the safety of the Indian maritime workforce.

The forum was attended by top government officials representing the MEA, DGS, and the Heads of Indian Missions in several West Asian and Black Sea countries such as Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, and Ukraine. The officials analyzed the security situation and examined contingency plans for the preparation of Indian diplomatic missions in handling emergencies relating to Indian seafarers.

In an effort to emphasize that the safety of seafarers from India is the topmost concern of the government, Sonowal instructed all relevant agencies to constantly coordinate with the missions of India in foreign countries, shipping companies, maritime organizations, and other relevant parties. Sonowal tasked the relevant officials to ensure that assistance and information are immediately provided to Indian seafarers, as and when needed, 24/7. It was reiterated by the minister that no Indian seafarer should be the victim of geopolitical conflicts.

This review also involved the need for improved response systems taking into account the security threats that have emerged from time to time affecting commercial sea routes. It involved monitoring and improved channels of communication as well as a response strategy that could help counter the risks that may emerge for the merchant ships of India operating in sensitive zones.

The most recent study is based on the “Seafarer-First” initiative which was launched by the government earlier this month after attacks were made on merchant vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz. The program involves the provision of real-time monitoring of the vessel, the provision of liaison officers for the seafarers affected by the attacks, improved coordination between ministries, and effective communication with Indian missions abroad.

India is one of the biggest producers of skilled maritime personnel in the world, which makes the safety of Indian seafarers a vital issue for the nation. It is for that reason that the Ministry is continuing its collaboration with maritime organizations and shipping companies for implementing the new safety policies and assessing the risks in relation to maritime security advisories being released from time to time. The most recent advisory from maritime organizations warns about the risks involved in areas witnessing conflicts.

The review highlights the determination of the government to protect Indian seamen in light of the ever-evolving international maritime environment. Through better coordination among agencies, increased diplomatic efforts, and improved emergency preparedness, the Ministry intends to make sure that Indian mariners remain protected while ensuring that global trade continues to function without interruption.
