Tata Power Inks Renewable PPAs to Meet Mumbai Demand
- Tata Power signs multiple renewable deals to meet Mumbai’s rising power demand
- 200 MW+ from solar, wind, and battery-backed plants
- Cuts 250,000+ tonnes of CO₂ annually, boosting 11.3 GW portfolio
Tata Power has secured renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs) to create reliable green energy solutions for Mumbai amidst peak demand during the city's hot and humid climate. The company services approximately 800,000 consumers throughout Mumbai, and demand recently peaked at 1,000 MW on October 17.
As part of its new agreements, Tata Power entered a 25-year PPA with Acme Solar Holdings, whereby Acme will deliver energy from a 50 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project involving integrated solar and battery energy storage system (BESS). Acme's PPA will supply power at ₹4.43 per unit.
The Tata Power renewable PPAs aim to meet rising Mumbai power demand by expanding Tata Power green energy initiatives, advancing renewable energy India, and ensuring sustainable power Mumbai through each new Tata Power agreement.
A Senior Official stated, "Additionally, the PPA includes a commitment to deliver four hours of peak-hour power to the city each month with 90 per cent availability".

In addition, Tata Power executed a PPA with Juniper Green Energy Limited for a 70 MW FDRE project through its subsidiary Juniper Green Sigma Eight, which will consist of 170 MWp of solar and wind combined with a 280 MWh storage component in the state of Maharashtra.
A third agreement has been made with Tata Power Renewables to develop an 80 MW FDRE project, which incorporates solar, wind and battery storage. This is expected to generate 315 million units per year and will reduce more than 250,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
Once these three projects are operational, Tata Power Mumbai will satisfy peak hour demand for residential, commercial and industrial users with firm and dispatchable renewable energy. The Official noted, "This initiative aids Tata Power's Mumbai distribution in fulfilling its Renewable Purchase Obligation, as mandated by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission".
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) is the renewable energy subsidiary of Tata Power which has a total renewable capacity of approximately 11.3 GW, of which 5.6 GW is operational. Tata Power is continuing to grow the renewable portfolio of solar, wind and storage, contributing significantly to India’s clean energy transition.
