Tata to boost iPhone casing capacity at Hosur plant to 100,000
Tata Electronics is getting ready to significantly expand the manufacturing capacity of Apple iPhone enclosures at its Hosur facility in Tamil Nadu, according to a report by The Economic Times.
"Tata Electronics is looking to double its existing capacity of around 50,000 enclosures," the report quoted a source as saying.
The capacity expansion is expected to be completed before Apple's annual new product launches, which are typically held in September. The Hosur facility is now in Phase II of development. It is noteworthy that before a fire that disrupted operations in September of last year, the Hosur plant was running at a capacity of 50,000 enclosures and was about to expand. The expansion follows Apple CEO Tim Cook's recent statements that highlighted India's growing importance within Apple's global manufacturing agenda.
“For the June quarter, we do expect the majority of iPhones sold in the US will have India as their country of origin,” Cook said during Apple’s Q1 earnings call on 1 May.
Tata Electronics has already been increasing its activity within Apple's global value chain. In early 2025, it acquired a 60 percent interest in Pegatron Technology India (PTI). Earlier in March 2024, Tata also acquired Wistron's operations in India in Narsapura, Karnataka.
These moves make clear Tata's ambitions to become a leading player in Apple's supplier ecosystem as Apple increases its reliance on Indian manufacturing partners. Tata's expansion is part of the larger pattern of expansion of Apple's suppliers in India.
