Synopsis: India and the United States plan deeper nuclear energy collaboration focused on advanced reactor technologies, clean energy expansion, and long-term strategic cooperation amid rising global energy security concerns.

India and the United States are preparing to significantly expand cooperation in nuclear energy, with U.S. Ambassador Eric Garcetti stating that “big things” are ahead in bilateral collaboration across clean energy, advanced reactor technology, and long-term strategic energy security. The remarks come as both countries deepen efforts to strengthen clean energy partnerships amid rising global energy demand and decarbonisation goals.

Speaking at the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum in Washington, Garcetti highlighted nuclear energy as a major area of future cooperation capable of transforming the bilateral relationship. He said both nations are increasingly aligned on the need for reliable low-carbon energy systems to support economic growth, industrial expansion, and climate commitments.

The discussions are expected to focus on advanced small modular reactors (SMRs), nuclear fuel supply chains, reactor technologies, and investment opportunities in India’s clean energy infrastructure. Industry experts believe India’s rapidly growing electricity demand and long-term net-zero targets make nuclear energy an important component of the country’s future energy mix.

The renewed momentum follows years of gradual progress since the landmark India-U.S. Civil Nuclear Agreement signed in 2008. While implementation challenges and liability concerns slowed major reactor projects in the past, recent geopolitical and energy security developments have revived interest in closer nuclear cooperation between the two countries.

Officials from both sides are also exploring opportunities for private-sector participation, technology transfer, and collaboration between American nuclear companies and Indian energy firms. The partnership could potentially support India’s plans to expand nuclear power generation capacity while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and improving energy diversification.

Beyond energy generation, the cooperation is expected to strengthen broader strategic ties between India and the United States in areas such as advanced technology, critical infrastructure, climate resilience, and supply chain security. Analysts note that nuclear collaboration increasingly carries geopolitical significance as countries seek secure and sustainable energy systems amid volatile global energy markets.

India currently aims to increase the share of non-fossil fuel sources in its overall energy mix while accelerating clean energy investments across solar, wind, hydrogen, and nuclear sectors. Enhanced U.S. cooperation could provide access to advanced technologies, financing support, and global expertise needed for large-scale nuclear expansion.

The latest developments signal growing confidence in the long-term strategic partnership between India and the United States, particularly in sectors considered critical for future economic growth, technological competitiveness, and global climate objectives.
