Uttar Pradesh Plans ₹5,500 Cr Battery Storage Investment
Uttar Pradesh is considering a ₹5,500 crore investment in battery storage systems at six thermal power plant locations, targeting 4,250 MWh of capacity to improve grid stability, meet peak demand and support clean energy integration.
The Uttar Pradesh government is considering an investment of approximately ₹5,500 crore to develop battery energy storage systems at six thermal power plant locations, strengthening the state’s electricity supply and supporting its clean energy transition. The proposed infrastructure is intended to help meet peak power demand, particularly during evening and night hours when solar generation is unavailable.
Under the plan, Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) will develop battery storage facilities at Anpara, Obra, Harduaganj, Panki, Parichha and Jawaharpur. The proposal forms part of the resource adequacy plan prepared by Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) to address the state’s future electricity requirements.

A feasibility study conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) has identified a combined storage capacity of 4,250 megawatt-hours (MWh) across the six locations. The proposed capacity includes 500 MWh at Anpara, 100 MWh at Obra, and 150 MWh each at Harduaganj, Panki and Parichha. Jawaharpur accounts for the largest share, with a proposed capacity of 3,200 MWh.
The estimated investment is around ₹5,500 crore, with the Jawaharpur facility representing a substantial portion of the overall expenditure. The projects are expected to cover approximately 8% of Uttar Pradesh’s projected additional energy storage requirement of nearly 53,000 MWh by 2035-36, according to estimates from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
The battery systems will store electricity during periods of lower demand or when power is readily available and release it when consumption increases. This could help manage fluctuations in renewable energy generation, improve grid stability and reduce the need for expensive electricity purchases during peak hours.
UPRVUNL Managing Director Mayur Maheshwari said the proposed storage facilities would help supply green power during non-solar hours and strengthen the state’s energy security. Existing land, switchyards and power evacuation infrastructure at the identified thermal power stations could also facilitate project development.

The initiative comes as Uttar Pradesh prepares for rising electricity demand and a larger role for renewable energy. Battery storage could support more reliable power availability while helping the state integrate clean energy into its electricity network.
Separately, a report by the International Forum for Environment, Sustainability and Technology estimates that Uttar Pradesh’s green economy could support 780,000 jobs by 2035 across renewable energy, green hydrogen, electric mobility, recycling and other sectors.
