Vietnam’s top leadership engagement with India gained momentum as To Lam met Ajit Doval in New Delhi, highlighting the deepening strategic partnership between the two countries.
The meeting took place during President To Lam’s official visit to India, his first since assuming office in 2026. During the interaction, both sides discussed ways to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership, focusing on expanding cooperation across security, defence, and regional issues.
A key aspect of the talks was the exchange of views on regional and global security developments, reflecting shared concerns over evolving geopolitical dynamics, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. The meeting also forms part of a broader set of high-level engagements during the Vietnamese President's visit. To Lam will be having talks with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi as well as other senior leaders and their discussions will be focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade investment defence, and technology.
India and Vietnam have a deep-rooted relationship which has been elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership since 2016. This visit is considered as a chance to give a new lease of life to the relationship, particularly since both countries are also celebrating the 10th anniversary of this partnership.
The talks between Doval and To Lam represent the continuation of a focus on security cooperation and strategic dialogue, which are indeed the main aspects of the India-Vietnam relationship. As both nations plan to play a bigger role in contributing to regional peace, such meetings are likely to strengthen their diplomatic and defence cooperation even more.
All in all, the meeting demonstrates a gradual deepening of India-Vietnam relations which are still being driven by sharing strategic interests, development of mutual trust, and aligning of regional and global priorities.
