MSME Ministry MoSPI Sign MoU to Strengthen Business Register

The MSME Ministry and MoSPI sign an MoU to strengthen the Statistical Business Register through Udyam Registration data sharing, improving the coverage, consistency and reliability of business information.

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to institutionalise data sharing for the development and strengthening of the Statistical Business Register (SBR).

The MoU is signed in New Delhi on today, by Dr. Rajneesh, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner, Ministry of MSME, and Dr. Dalip Singh, Additional Director General, MoSPI, in the presence of senior officials from both ministries.

Under the agreement, the two ministries establish a framework for sharing relevant unit-level data from the Udyam Registration ecosystem maintained by the Ministry of MSME. The data is expected to be shared through application programming interfaces (APIs), enabling the two-way exchange of information required for the preparation of the National Statistical Business Register (NSBR).

The framework aims to improve the availability and quality of business information used for statistical purposes. By integrating relevant information from Udyam Registration, the initiative is expected to strengthen the coverage, consistency and reliability of data on business units.

The Statistical Business Register serves as a central and regularly updated database of statistical units engaged in economic activities within a defined geographical area. It captures information on businesses, enterprises, establishments and other economic units, along with their key characteristics and relationships.

The SBR provides an important foundation for the country's economic statistics system. It helps identify the target population for economic surveys, supports survey sample selection and enables the production of business demography statistics. It also provides a common framework for integrating business-related information from different data sources.

The collaboration between the MSME Ministry and MoSPI is expected to support a more structured approach to maintaining business data and improve the statistical infrastructure used for economic analysis and policymaking.

The initiative also seeks to facilitate better coordination between administrative data systems and official statistics. The use of API-based data sharing can provide a mechanism for regularly transferring relevant information while supporting the development of a more comprehensive national business register.

Through the MoU, both ministries aim to strengthen the statistical ecosystem by improving access to reliable business information and supporting the wider use of integrated data for economic statistics.
