
India, Sweden Sign Green Steel MoU for Cleaner Steelmaking
India and Sweden deepen green steel cooperation as SRTMI and SWERIM sign an MoU covering decarbonisation, circular economy, advanced steels and AI/ML. The partnership promotes joint R&D, technology exchange, training and sustainable steelmaking.
India and Sweden are strengthening cooperation in sustainable steelmaking after the Steel Research and Technology Mission of India (SRTMI) and Sweden’s SWERIM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance research, technology and innovation in the iron and steel sector. The partnership focuses on decarbonisation, green steel and advanced manufacturing technologies.
The agreement establishes a framework for joint research and development, technical knowledge exchange and collaborative projects between the two organisations. It brings together India’s steel research ecosystem and Sweden’s expertise in developing low-carbon and resource-efficient industrial technologies.

Decarbonisation and green steel form a central focus of the collaboration. The partners plan to explore technologies and processes that can reduce carbon emissions from steel production while improving energy and resource efficiency. The cooperation comes as the global steel industry faces growing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint and transition towards cleaner production methods.
The partnership also covers the circular economy and resource efficiency, areas that are becoming increasingly important as steel producers seek to minimise waste, improve raw-material utilisation and increase the recycling of industrial resources. These efforts are expected to support the development of more sustainable production models for the steel industry.
Another area of cooperation is the development of advanced and high-performance steels. Joint research in this field can support the production of specialised steel grades required for sectors such as automotive, infrastructure, energy and advanced engineering.
Digital technologies are also included in the agreement, with artificial intelligence and machine learning identified as areas for potential collaboration. Their application in manufacturing can support process optimisation, predictive maintenance, quality control and improved operational efficiency.

The MoU further provides for capacity building and training, enabling researchers and technical professionals from both countries to exchange expertise and develop specialised capabilities.
Senior representatives from India’s Ministry of Steel, along with the CMDs of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), NMDC and MOIL, are present during the signing. Their participation highlights the strategic importance attached to international research partnerships in supporting India’s transition towards greener steel production.
India is pursuing multiple measures to reduce emissions from its steel industry, including the development of a Green Steel Taxonomy and a roadmap for greening the sector. The government has also been promoting green hydrogen and renewable energy as potential enablers of low-carbon steelmaking.
The India-Sweden collaboration therefore provides an avenue for both countries to combine research capabilities and accelerate technological solutions for sustainable steel production. It is expected to contribute to innovation, resource efficiency and the development of globally competitive green steel technologies.
