Cyprus Eyes Stronger India Trade, Tech, Defence Ties
Synopsis: Nikos Christodoulides begins his India visit to deepen cooperation in trade, defence, technology, investment, and strategic connectivity between the two countries.
Nikos Christodoulides has begun an official visit to India aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, technology, investment, innovation, and strategic connectivity as both countries seek to deepen their growing partnership amid evolving geopolitical and economic dynamics.
The Cypriot President is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers, senior government officials, and business leaders. The visit includes engagements in Mumbai and New Delhi, with discussions focused on expanding cooperation across sectors such as artificial intelligence, fintech, defence and security, research, maritime affairs, mobility, and digital technologies.
During the visit, President Christodoulides is scheduled to hold wide-ranging talks with Narendra Modi on enhancing economic partnerships and strengthening strategic collaboration between the two nations. The discussions are expected to build upon the India-Cyprus comprehensive partnership roadmap agreed upon during Modi’s visit to Cyprus in 2025, which marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Mediterranean nation in over two decades.

Trade and investment cooperation remain central to the bilateral agenda. Business organisations from both countries are actively exploring opportunities in infrastructure, shipping, financial services, renewable energy, logistics, tourism, and advanced technologies. During the visit, the Confederation of Indian Industry signed a strategic MoU with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry to promote joint ventures, investment flows, and sector-specific partnerships.
Defence and maritime cooperation are also emerging as important pillars of India-Cyprus relations. Both countries have been expanding collaboration in maritime security, cyber security, defence exchanges, and regional stability initiatives in the Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific regions. Analysts noted that Cyprus’ strategic location and India’s growing engagement with Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean are increasing the importance of bilateral ties.
The two nations are additionally expected to discuss India-European Union cooperation, supply-chain resilience, digital transformation, and connectivity initiatives linking Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Cyprus has increasingly positioned itself as a gateway for Indian businesses seeking stronger access to European markets and financial networks.
Experts believe the visit reflects India’s expanding diplomatic engagement with smaller but strategically important European partners as New Delhi strengthens economic and geopolitical cooperation across the Mediterranean region.
