Denmark, India Deepen Maritime Ties With Shipbuilding Focus

India and Denmark deepen maritime cooperation by exploring commercial and naval shipbuilding, port development and advanced technologies, with a feasibility study and Danish industry delegation aimed at strengthening investment and industrial partnerships.

India and Denmark are broadening their cooperation in maritime affairs from green shipping to commercial and naval ship building, as well as development of ports and maritime technology. Currently, the two countries are collaborating in conducting a feasibility study aimed at exploring areas where the strengths of Denmark in expertise and India in manufacturing can lead to increased collaboration in maritime matters.

Through this feasibility study, the intention is to be able to define the possible areas that may be used in cooperation in the construction of ships both commercially and militarily. After conducting the study, both sides intend to come up with a specific program that would assist in making more Danes in India through their shipping firms.

Denmark also plans to prepare a group of key Danish companies specialising in defence to visit India. This group will interact with Indian naval entities and discuss the areas of possible cooperation in the sphere of defence maritime technologies. Such an interaction will allow for identifying the prospects of technological partnerships and industrial cooperation.

As per officials at the Royal Danish Embassy, Danish companies currently have a considerable footprint in India’s shipping and maritime sector. Their technological know-how includes energy-efficient systems, electrical machinery, pumps, drives, marine coatings, digital technologies, and more. The scope for collaboration extends to naval as well as commercial shipping.

This collaboration is happening at a time when India is becoming more and more focused on developing its own capabilities at sea. Approximately 95 per cent of India’s trade is carried out via sea routes; hence the necessity for an effective maritime industry. The government is working on implementing huge investments as part of Sagarmala 2.0.

The Indian market provides an opportunity for Denmark to extend the reach of its maritime technology and engineering firms. For Indian shipyards, having access to specialised technologies would be beneficial for efficiency and modernisation purposes.

The suggested collaboration is also based on the existing Green Strategic Partnership between India and Denmark, where the two nations have collaborated in the past on sustainable maritime operations, green shipping, and port-related ventures. The addition of commercial and naval shipbuilding to the list adds an industrial and strategic dimension to the relationship.

Increased cooperation in shipbuilding can further enhance supply chain diversity and maritime resilience. Cooperation related to design, engineering, digitisation, energy efficiency, and advanced manufacturing can help the Indian shipyards increase their competitiveness while at the same time offering possibilities for Danish companies to join in on India's growing maritime sector.

The feasibility study and proposed delegation to do business would be an important step in implementing the relationship between India and Denmark in practical maritime initiatives. Through the collaboration of Danish technology and expertise with the production capacities of India, there will be shipbuilding, advancement in naval technologies, and port improvement.

This effort brings into focus the growing strategic importance of maritime cooperation in India-Denmark relations. Given that the two nations are looking for sustainable development through improved maritime power, cooperation on issues such as shipbuilding, maritime technology, ports, and maritime services should present them with fresh possibilities.
