Andhra, UK Sign MoU to Transform Amaravati and Urban Infrastructure

Andhra Pradesh and the UK sign an MoU to strengthen urban infrastructure across the state, focusing on Amaravati and 123 municipalities. The partnership covers sustainable planning, technology transfer, smart mobility and modern infrastructure development.

The Andhra Pradesh government and the United Kingdom have signed a Government-to-Government Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen urban infrastructure development across the state, with a major focus on transforming Amaravati into a world-class smart and livable city. The partnership also extends to all 123 municipalities and municipal corporations in Andhra Pradesh.

The agreement is signed by Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration and Urban Development Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar and Chaz Walia, Deputy Director for Government Partnerships at the UK Department for Business and Trade. Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister P Narayana, British Deputy High Commissioner Gareth Wynn Owen and UK Trade Counsellor for South Asia Mark Birrell are also present.

The partnership is built around four key areas: infrastructure planning, sustainable urban development, technology transfer and innovation, and integrated urban mobility. Under the infrastructure planning component, India and the UK will collaborate on long-term project planning, prioritisation, financial feasibility assessments and the preparation of investment-ready business cases.

UK expertise will also support Andhra Pradesh in adopting modern urban planning practices, sustainable construction methods and environmental conservation frameworks. The collaboration aims to improve the quality and efficiency of infrastructure projects while promoting more sustainable urban growth.

Technology transfer is another major component of the agreement. The state plans to introduce advanced tools such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital twins and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) into urban infrastructure planning and execution. Knowledge-sharing and capacity-building programmes involving UK institutions and state agencies will also help train engineers, planners and other professionals.

Integrated urban mobility will focus on improving public transport connectivity by linking metro systems, bus corridors, airports and pedestrian infrastructure. Data-driven traffic management solutions are expected to help reduce congestion, improve last-mile connectivity and lower urban emissions.

The partnership comes as Andhra Pradesh undertakes urban infrastructure projects worth approximately ₹40,000 crore across its municipalities. These projects include roads, storm-water drainage, drinking water supply and solid and liquid waste management systems. The government intends to incorporate UK technical expertise and international best practices into these ongoing and upcoming projects.

The agreement is expected to strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s urban planning capabilities while accelerating the adoption of technology-driven and sustainable infrastructure solutions. For Amaravati, the collaboration represents another step towards developing the capital as a modern, smart and globally competitive urban centre.
