Foreign Secretary Misri Visits Sri Lanka to Boost Ties

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has arrived in Sri Lanka for high-level talks on development cooperation, trade, connectivity, energy, and regional security, reaffirming India's commitment to strengthening its partnership with the island nation.

Foreign Secretary of India, Mr. Vikram Misri has paid a one-day visit to Colombo to boost the long-standing relationship of cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. This visit is in continuation of a number of visits that have been paid to each other by India and Sri Lanka in recent times.

Upon his arrival, Misri was welcomed by the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, accompanied by senior officials from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the visit, Foreign Secretary is set to meet President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath, along with discussing other issues with other senior officials of the government. In accordance with the Indian High Commission, the meetings are meant to keep the progress of important bilateral endeavors going.

These meetings are anticipated to consider progress made in current India-backed development programs, while looking at new areas of cooperation in sectors like connectivity, trade, investment, energy, digital connectivity, maritime cooperation, health care, education, and capacity building. India is the biggest development partner of Sri Lanka, and the aid amounts to over USD 7.5 billion, including over USD 850 million worth of grants for various development projects in all 25 districts of Sri Lanka.

The themes of regional security and maritime cooperation are likely to dominate during the talks as well. There have been many areas in which both India and Sri Lanka have increased cooperation in the Indian Ocean region, including maritime security, energy connectivity, disaster management, and resilient supply chains. The two countries have continued their close cooperation in accordance with India's 'Neighbourhood First' approach.

The visit comes on the heels of many recent diplomatic activities by both the senior political leadership as well as other officials from both countries, which have seen acceleration in collaboration in the areas of infrastructure, renewable energy, port development, housing, railways, and digital infrastructure.

As part of his trip, Misri went through the current cooperation between himself and Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath in relation to the implementation of the priority projects and continued diplomatic discourse. The leaders have identified means of implementing the current projects and areas where they should cooperate.

The visit of the Foreign Secretary clearly indicates how seriously the two nations take their relationship in view of their comprehensive partnership. Through continuing high level dialogue and widening cooperation in strategic and developmental fields, the two nations are looking forward to enhancing their bilateral ties along with regional connectivity in the Indian Ocean region.
