Germany has taken a significant step ahead by granting a visa-free transit facility for Indian passport holders who fly through its airports. This move is projected to ease international travel for Indians and also strengthen the bonds between the two nations.
The decision was revealed in a joint statement issued by India and Germany right after the visit of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to India on January 12-13. This was Merz's first visit to India and also his first trip to Asia as the Federal Chancellor.
With the introduction of the new visa-free transit facility, Indian passengers will not be required to hold a separate transit visa any longer when they are merely passing through German airports on their way to another country.
The entire process will be much quicker, more comfortable, and less bureaucratic. Indian Prime Minister Modi expressed his support for the initiative and claimed it would not only make travel easier but also strengthen the overall link between the populations of the two countries.

The announcement made by the leaders underlined the fact that the deep understanding and friendship between the two nations are the main support for the Strategic Partnership of India and Germany.
The Indian and German leaders emphasized the increasing interchange of students, researchers, skilled labor, artists, and tourists and at the same time, they acknowledged the Indian community as a vital factor in Germany’s economy, innovation, and cultural life.
The two nations agreed to further open up the areas of education, research, vocational training, culture, and youth exchanges, thus gaining a better understanding of each other.
Education and skills development were the main topics of discussions. Both sides acknowledged the increasing number of Indian students in Germany, the expanding of joint and dual degree programmes, and the more intimate institutional connections between Indian Institutes of Technology and German technical universities.
They decided to make an Indo-German Comprehensive Roadmap on Higher Education, with PM Modi inviting the leading German universities to establish campuses in India under the New Education Policy. This project is aimed at the mutual strengthening of academic collaboration and the simultaneous widening of career chances for students in both countries.
