Synopsis: India concluded the 3rd BRICS Transport Ministers' Meeting by adopting a joint declaration focused on sustainable mobility, green transport, digital innovation, multimodal connectivity, and stronger transport cooperation among BRICS nations.

India has successfully hosted the 3rd BRICS Transport Ministers' Meeting in Nagpur, as part of its BRICS Chairship 2026, with the participation of transport ministers and senior officials from BRICS member countries, to foster cooperation in creating sustainable, resilient, and future-proof transport systems. The 3rd BRICS Transport Ministers' Meeting was a significant achievement in the domain of transport collaboration within BRICS.

This ministerial session comes after the 3rd BRICS Transport Working Group (TWG) Senior Officials Meeting, where delegates have finalized the agenda and drafted the Ministerial Declaration to be adopted. This declaration highlights the common commitment by all the BRICS nations towards improved transport cooperation, improved infrastructure resilience, technology innovation, and sustainable economic development through efficient transport systems.

One of the important results of this summit was the unanimous signing of the BRICS Transport Ministerial Declaration. This document underscores the necessity to develop integrated and safe transport systems that are accessible and sustainable for the environment, along with promoting policy coordination among member countries. It also promotes collaboration in logistics, road safety, digital transport solutions, and infrastructure planning.

According to Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari, there is a need for an efficient transport system which would help in the growth of the economy while also keeping the environment safe from harm. For this reason, India came up with a proposal for a resolution which would focus on creating a carbon neutral transport system through biofuels, sustainable aviation fuels, electric mobility, and other alternate sources of energy.

Further, the discussion among the ministers included efforts on ways to make transportation more interconnected through the process of infrastructure development. Enhanced connectivity between roads, railways, waterways, air transport, and ports will help in making the movement of goods and people easier, and at the same time will improve the trade relations between BRICS nations.

The digital transformation process has been identified as yet another important sphere of cooperation that has come out of the talks. The member nations examined the possibility of employing the intelligent transportation systems, digital logistics tools, artificial intelligence, and other technologies involving the use of data in order to enhance efficiency and safety in the sphere of transport.

Furthermore, sustainable infrastructure development was also emphasized in the discussion. It includes methods that would ensure environmental-friendly transportation initiatives, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, promotion of cleaner fuels, and building climate resilience in transportation planning. Such an endeavour is also linked with the goals for sustainability being undertaken by BRICS countries in the Chairship of India till 2026.

The leadership of India during this event was consistent with the BRICS Chairship Theme of “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Through discussion and agreement, India tried to ensure collaboration in transport policies among the member countries, sharing best practices and technical knowledge.

The successful completion of the 3rd BRICS Transport Ministers' Meeting reiterates the dedication of BRICS countries in developing efficient, sustainable, and integrated transport networks. The adoption of a joint ministerial statement and increasing cooperation in areas such as green mobility, digital transformation, multimodality, and infrastructure development helps in building a resilient global transport system.
