India, Malaysia Review Defence Cooperation at Military Meet
Synopsis: India and Malaysia review bilateral defence cooperation at the 12th Military Cooperation Meeting, focusing on military exchanges, maritime security, defence technology, cyber security, and Indo-Pacific stability.
India and Malaysia have, reviewed the full spectrum of their bilateral defence relationship in the 12th India-Malaysia Sub Committee Meeting on Military Cooperation (SCMC) held in New Delhi. During this meeting it kind of reaffirms, both countries commitment to strengthening defence ties and pushing ahead their Enhanced Strategic Partnership by leaning into tighter military collaboration and regional security cooperation.
The meeting sort of was co-chaired by Amitabh Prasad Joint Secretary in India’s Ministry of Defence, and by Major General Amer Mahmud Bin Abdul Rahman who serves as Assistant Chief of Staff for Defence Operations and Training in the Malaysian Armed Forces. Both delegations said they were pretty happy with the steady progress that’s been made in defence relations, and they agreed to further deepen military engagement across a number of domains, not just one area.
They talked about mostly ongoing defence stuff, like military-to-military exchanges and bilateral exercises, plus staff talks, some professional training programmes and a few capacity building initiatives. Also there was maritime cooperation and a kind of collaboration in those emerging security domains. In a way, the two sides looked at what had moved forward since the last SCMC, and then they went through possible measures to improve day to day operational cooperation between their armed forces.
Both countries agreed to ramp up professional military exchanges, sort of, by boosting participation inside each other’s training institutions and more specialised courses. The meeting also spotted ways to beef up coordination in defence manufacturing, defence technology, cyber security and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, (HADR), which kind of mirrors how the bilateral defence engagement keeps getting broader over time.
Maritime security was still a big deal in the discussions. India and Malaysia kept reaffirming their shared commitment to sustaining peace, stability, security and even freedom of navigation across the Indo-Pacific, all in line with international law. Both sides also noted how the maritime cooperation is becoming more and more important, particularly for tackling regional security challenges, and for protecting critical sea lanes.

The two delegations also traded views on regional, global security developments. They appreciated each other’s active participation in the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) frame work, and reaffirmed their commitment to improving hands on cooperation under the Experts' Working Group on Counter-Terrorism. The talk(s) seemed to underscore how essential coordinated regional measures are, for tackling shifting security threats and concerns.
The SCMC kinda works as the main military-to-military consultative mechanism between India and Malaysia, and it sets up the groundwork for the India-Malaysia Defence Cooperation Meeting. That meeting is typically held at the Defence Secretary level, and officials said they feel quite confident the results from the latest session will help enable productive discussions in the soon coming high level defence dialogue. In a sense, it all ties together, sort of.
During the visit, the Malaysian delegation called on Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, and also dropped by the DPSU Bhawan at the World Trade Centre in New Delhi, to pick up some insight on India’s defence public sector capabilities. The head of the Malaysian delegation, meanwhile, paid tribute to India’s fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial.
India and Malaysia have, rather steadily extended defence cooperation over the years, via routine military exchanges, naval interactions, joint exercises and training programmes, that kind of thing. Defence engagement has also become a kind of main pillar of the larger bilateral relationship, it helps tie together more cooperation in trade, technology, education, and regional diplomacy too.
The 12th Military Cooperation Meeting kind of shows the mutual pledge from both countries to build more solid defence connections, with mutual trust, similar strategic interests, and a shared dream for a secure, stable, and prosperous Indo- Pacific region. In a way, the results of the meeting are expected to deepen bilateral military cooperation, and also help reinforce the strategic partnership between India and Malaysia a bit more.
