  • India faces oil reserve concerns as supplies may last only six days amid crisis
  • Heavy dependence on West Asia oil imports increases vulnerability to supply disruptions and rising crude prices
  • Experts urge strengthening strategic reserves diversifying energy sources and accelerating renewable energy transition for stability

Rising tensions in West Asia have created growing worries about India's energy security because reports indicate that the country can only sustain its oil reserves for a brief time during major supply outages.

The current fighting in the region has impacted worldwide oil distribution networks especially through the important Strait of Hormuz which serves as a main passage for most of India's crude oil shipments.

The Indian economy faces major energy security threats because the country relies on imported crude oil for about 90 percent of its requirements and this area experiences ongoing disruptions.

The report assessments show that India possesses only minor crude oil reserves when compared to other major economies. The country maintains reserves which will last about 40 to 45 days under normal conditions but ongoing disruptions together with reduced imports will decrease this protection period.

Analysts predict that supply chain problems which already exist will decrease usable reserves to only a few days if there is major situation escalation. The situation creates doubts about the country's ability to manage prolonged international conflicts which will disrupt energy supply chains.

India needs to address its oil supply problem because it depends too much on West Asia for its oil imports which use dangerous maritime routes.

The domestic economy will experience two effects from the conflict escalation which will lead to higher crude oil prices and increased import costs. The decrease in fuel supply will create negative effects on industrial operations and transportation systems and the complete economic performance of the country.

Experts recommend that India should develop its strategic petroleum reserves and establish new energy sources while advancing its renewable energy transition to decrease its future import requirements. The global situation creates an immediate requirement for improved energy security planning to protect against unknown threats.
