India Reaches 100 GW Domestic Solar Module Capacity Under ALMM
- India reaches 100 GW solar module manufacturing under ALMM, up from 2.3 GW in 2014
- ALMM ensures only approved domestic modules are used in key projects, curbing imports
- Solar cells to be included in ALMM from June 2026 to further strengthen self-reliance
With more than 100 GW of operational solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing capacity in the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), India has crossed a very important threshold.
"India has achieved a historic milestone — 100 GW Solar PV Module Manufacturing Capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) — a remarkable rise from just 2.3 GW in 2014!", said Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy.
There was an operational capacity of mere 2.3 GW back in 2014. This is a critical landmark in India's course of attaining self-reliance in power and meeting its target of installation of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030.
He added "Driven by the visionary leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji and transformative initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules, we are building a robust, self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem. This achievement strengthens our path towards #AtmanirbharBharat and the target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030".

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) developed the ALMM, Approved List of Models and Manufacturers, which essentially approves solar module manufacturers for supplying solar modules to government-sponsored projects and utility scale solar photovoltaic projects.
The operational capacity listed on the ALMM basis has grown from just under 8.2 GW in March 2021, when the inaugural list was published, to presently 100 GW.
"This is yet another milestone towards self-reliance! It depicts the success of India's manufacturing capabilities and our efforts towards popularising clean energy", stated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his X.
To support domestic manufacturing, the government is now Chairing the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules to encourage investment and innovation in the sector. Since June 2026, the government has decided under the ALMM framework that solar cells used for plant facilities will be considered domestically procured materials in government projects supported by funds or incentives.
All these measures are a result of India's heavy investments in renewable energy in an effort to stem dependence on imports and nurture a massive and sustainable solar manufacturing ecosystem, with policies toward seizing some of the venture independently. The Government's aim for ALMM, in part, is to expand the domestic ALMM listed capacities, which is likely an important step in movements towards establishing a competitive and sustainable solar industry.
