
India Set to Add Record 43 GW Renewable Capacity in 2025
- India targets 43 GW renewable energy addition in 2025, with 30 GW achieved.

According to Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, who provided insight last week at a September 2, 2025, industry event, India is on track to add an unprecedented 43 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy in 2025 and 30 GW of renewable energy is already accomplished as of September. In addition, by September 2025 India's renewable energy sector installed roughly 22 GW of solar and wind capacity between the January and June months, with estimates to reach a total of 39-43 GW installed capacity at the end of 2025.
Minister Joshi expressed confidence in hitting India's 500 GW renewable energy target by 2030, noting the current installed capacity of 226 GW of which 186.3 GW is currently under implementation, and a bidding pool of 67.08 GW, and a working total of nearly 499 GW as Indian renewable energy project work plan continues advancing.

The government is confronting challenges like transmission constraints and slow developments with Power Sale Agreements (PSAs) by changing its bidding guidelines to cancel Letters of Award for projects failing to progress in 12 months. The Ministry is drafting a transmission plan for 2030 and new weather forecasting systems to improve performance.
The Ministry plans to commence the third phase of the Green Energy Corridor, and the second phase of the PM-KUSUM scheme. Pradeep Kumar Das, chairperson, IREDA stated, "We need Rs 30 lakh crore, by 2030, financed by bond markets and non-banking financial companies." He also reiterated that India's solar module manufacturing capacity from nearly 38 GW in 2023-24 to reach 100 GW in 2025, and that India was reducing its reliance on imports.
