India Urges Germany to Co-develop Niche Defence Tech
- India invites Germany for co-development in niche defence tech
- Focus on AI, radar, sensors and underwater systems
- Partnership aims long-term strategic defence and industrial collaboration
India has called for deeper defence collaboration with Germany, with Rajnath Singh urging German industry leaders to co-develop and co-produce advanced defence technologies in niche segments, signalling a strategic shift toward long-term industrial partnerships.
The message was delivered during the Defence Investor Summit in Munich, where Singh emphasised that partnerships built on reliability and shared interests are becoming essential amid rising geopolitical uncertainties, supply chain disruptions, and rapid technological changes.
A key focus of the proposal is collaboration in specialised and high-impact defence technologies. India has invited German firms to engage in joint development across areas such as advanced radar and sensor systems, multi-sensor platforms, AI-enabled unmanned aerial systems, sonobuoys, and underwater communication technologies. These domains are increasingly critical in modern warfare and defence innovation.

Singh highlighted that India is positioning itself not just as a buyer of defence equipment but as a co-creator and manufacturing partner. This aligns with the broader “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, which aims to build domestic capabilities while encouraging international collaboration rather than limiting foreign participation.
He also underscored India’s advantages as a defence manufacturing destination, including a rapidly expanding market, a skilled workforce, and a stable policy environment. These factors, combined with regulatory reforms and infrastructure investments, make India a viable long-term partner for global defence companies.
The push for collaboration also reflects a broader global trend, where countries and industries are reassessing dependencies and diversifying supply chains to enhance resilience. India’s approach seeks to integrate itself into global defence supply chains while strengthening domestic innovation ecosystems.
Overall, the initiative signals a deepening of India-Germany defence ties, with a growing emphasis on co-development, technology transfer, and joint production. By focusing on niche technologies and strategic cooperation, both nations aim to build resilient defence capabilities and contribute to broader global stability.
