India Warns US Tariffs on Russian Oil Could Strain Ties
India warns that proposed US tariffs targeting Russian oil buyers could affect bilateral ties, while New Delhi reaffirms energy security commitments and plans to protect its trade and economic interests.
India has warned that proposed US measures targeting countries that continue to purchase Russian oil could affect bilateral relations, while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining energy security and protecting its trade interests.
The warning comes after the US House of Representatives passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which authorises US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries, including India and China, that continue certain purchases of Russian energy. The legislation follows its earlier passage in the US Senate and now requires presidential action to become law.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said New Delhi has raised concerns with US officials in recent months over the potential impact of the measures on both bilateral relations and international energy markets. The ministry said India would take necessary steps to protect its trade and economic interests and work with domestic trade and industry bodies to address the implications.
New Delhi also reiterated that securing reliable and affordable energy supplies remains a priority. India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, has become a major buyer of Russian crude in recent years and says it will continue sourcing energy from diverse suppliers according to market conditions.
Indian refiners have already arranged supplies for September and October that include Russian crude. Refining industry sources have expressed concern that sharply higher tariffs could increase oil costs and affect refinery margins. They have suggested seeking transitional arrangements that would allow existing transactions to be completed and provide flexibility for future purchases.

The proposed measures could also add complexity to ongoing India-US trade negotiations. The tariff issue may affect discussions on a broader trade agreement, while India continues to engage with Washington on the way forward.
