Nepal and India discuss post-flood reconstruction, trade, investment, energy and connectivity, seeking to strengthen development cooperation and deepen their longstanding economic partnership.

The dialogue between Nepal and India is about improving cooperation in development and economics, with the rebuilding of infrastructure after the floods, trade, investments, energy, and connectivity being some of the major topics of the dialogue. The dialogue is happening when Dr Swarnim Wagle, Finance Minister of Nepal, visits India and meets the Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the reconstruction needs of Nepal due to the floods and landslides which have occurred in different areas in the country. Nepal has already evaluated the losses suffered from the recent flooding incident of August 26 and is now requesting help in rebuilding its damaged infrastructure and other property. According to an initial evaluation, Nepal has suffered physical damage worth NPR 274.48 billion and total losses and damage amount to NPR 408.28 billion.

In light of all of these factors, post-disaster rebuilding is one area that is becoming a significant part of the India-Nepal talks. Both nations also take a look at the possibilities that exist for them to boost their economic relationship by increasing trade and investments.

In addition, energy cooperation is also discussed in relation to efforts made by Nepal to repair its power generation capability due to the effect of the floods. In this regard, the Indian government has already given its approval to supply electricity up to 654 MW to Nepal on a daily basis for 18 hours until December 31, 2026.

The three-day trip by Wagle also involves meetings with high-level officials of India and Indian business representatives. He will have talks with the External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, and will be meeting Indian industrialists regarding the investment policies of Nepal.
