New Zealand Parliament Clears FTA with India, Boosting Trade Ties
New Zealand Parliament passes legislation to implement its trade agreement with India, reducing or eliminating tariffs on about 95% of New Zealand exports. The pact also provides greater market access and investment opportunities for both countries.
New Zealand’s Parliament has passed legislation to implement the country’s free trade agreement with India, clearing a key domestic approval stage for a pact that reduces or eliminates tariffs on about 95% of New Zealand exports to the Indian market.
The legislation passes with a 93-29 vote, receiving support from the opposition Labour Party. More than half of the products covered by the agreement are set to become duty-free from the date the pact takes effect.
The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement is designed to expand market access and strengthen bilateral trade and investment. Under the agreement, New Zealand exporters gain improved access to India for a wide range of goods, while India receives duty-free access for its exports to New Zealand.

The pact also includes an investment commitment from New Zealand of NZ$20 billion over 15 years, aimed at supporting greater investment flows between the two countries.
For New Zealand exporters, the tariff reductions cover products including agricultural and forestry goods, while some sensitive dairy products remain subject to specific arrangements rather than complete tariff elimination. The agreement therefore provides differentiated market access across sectors.
India and New Zealand signed the trade agreement in April 2026 after negotiations focused on expanding goods and services trade and improving investment opportunities. The agreement still requires both countries to complete their respective domestic procedures before it enters into force.
The parliamentary approval in New Zealand comes as both countries seek to deepen economic engagement. The agreement is expected to provide exporters with greater certainty over market access and establish a framework for further growth in bilateral commerce.

Indian exporters are also set to benefit from improved access to the New Zealand market, covering sectors such as textiles, apparel, leather, footwear, engineering products, marine products, gems and jewellery.
The latest development marks an important step towards implementation of the India-New Zealand trade agreement. Once the remaining domestic procedures are completed, the pact will establish new tariff arrangements and provide a broader framework for bilateral trade and investment.
