NLC India subsidiary NIRL has secured a 900 MW solar power project from GUVNL, strengthening its renewable energy portfolio and supporting India's clean energy transition through large-scale solar power generation.

The state-owned company NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) has successfully bagged an important renewable energy project, as its wholly owned subsidiary, NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL) won a Letter of Award (LoA) from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) for the development of a 900 MW solar power plant project. This project has been awarded on tariff basis and forms an important milestone for NLC India in its efforts to build up its renewable energy business portfolio.

As per the project, NIRL would set up the grid connected solar power plant of 900 MW capacity and provide electricity produced to GUVNL under a Power Purchase Agreement. The project is likely to boost the renewable energy capabilities of Gujarat and would help achieve the Indian target of making an increased portion of clean energy part of national energy mix. This award would further consolidate the position of NLC India in the renewable energy field.

NLC India’s latest undertaking is in sync with its longer term vision to become one of the leading integrated energy companies with a key emphasis on renewable energy production. An erstwhile coal mining and thermal power producer, NLC has been increasingly moving into the area of renewable energy production as a key part of its green energy strategy. This has been achieved through the involvement of NIRL.

The 900 MW solar plants helps add to the pipeline of renewable energy projects for NLC India. The company has been successful in acquiring some large solar power plants in various states such as Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, owing to its competitiveness in India's renewable energy tenders. The projects help the company achieve its objective of having more renewable energy production capabilities while being less dependent on thermal power production.

The Indian economy is witnessing fast-paced development of renewable energy investment owing to favorable government policies, competitive bidding, and increasing demand for renewable energy sources. Projects like the large scale solar project that has been given to NIRL will be crucial in meeting the Indian aim of increasing the capacity of non-fossil fuel energy. Gujarat has become a top renewable energy destination in India due to the availability of good transmission lines, solar resources, and favorable policies towards investment.

Economic benefits are also envisaged from the project through creation of infrastructure, job creation, and increased involvement of the private sector in the renewable energy value chain. Through building up a stronger portfolio in green energy, NLC India intends to help India achieve its goals of becoming net-zero while delivering sustainable value.

This award marks the ongoing dedication of NLC India to further the growth of clean energy. With the company making progress in the process of diversifying their sources of energy, such a massive solar project as the one in Gujarat is expected to become an essential part of this process.
