Synopsis: OIL Green Energy and Hindustan Waste Treatment form a joint venture to develop compressed biogas and waste-to-energy projects across India, supporting clean energy expansion, sustainable waste management, and the country’s circular economy objectives.

OIL Green Energy (OGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Oil India Limited, has signed a joint venture agreement with Hindustan Waste Treatment (HWT) to develop compressed biogas (CBG) and waste-to-energy projects across India. The partnership marks a significant step toward strengthening India’s renewable energy ecosystem and supporting the country’s circular economy ambitions through sustainable waste management initiatives.

Under the agreement, both companies will establish a 50:50 joint venture focused on integrated bioenergy infrastructure and environmentally sustainable projects. The collaboration aims to convert municipal and organic waste into clean energy solutions such as compressed biogas and other renewable energy products, helping reduce landfill dependency while promoting cleaner fuel alternatives.

OGEL has been leading Oil India’s expansion into renewable and green energy sectors as the company diversifies beyond traditional hydrocarbon operations. Through this partnership, Oil India seeks to strengthen its presence in India’s emerging bioenergy market while contributing to national clean energy and energy security objectives.

Hindustan Waste Treatment brings operational expertise in municipal solid waste-based bioenergy projects, including engineering, project execution, commissioning, and plant operations. The company has already implemented biogas projects in different regions of India, including North Goa, and specializes in sustainable waste treatment technologies. Its parent company, SFC Environmental Technologies , also operates in wastewater treatment and water reuse solutions.

The joint venture aligns with India’s broader renewable energy transition and policy support for waste-to-energy and compressed biogas projects. Government initiatives such as the SATAT scheme and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s Waste-to-Energy Programme continue encouraging investments in bioenergy infrastructure to reduce carbon emissions and improve waste utilization efficiency.

Industry experts believe that rising focus on sustainable fuel alternatives, urban waste management, and decentralized energy systems is accelerating investment activity in India’s bioenergy sector. The OGEL-HWT partnership is expected to support India’s long-term decarbonization goals while creating opportunities in renewable infrastructure, green fuels, and sustainable urban development.
