PM Modi to Launch Tricity Highway Projects on July 17
Synopsis: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch three highway projects worth ₹5,278 crore in the Tricity region, enhancing connectivity, easing congestion, improving airport access, and boosting logistics, trade, and regional economic growth.
The inauguration of three national highway projects in the Chandigarh Tricity will be done by the Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi on July 17th, which will be a milestone towards achieving better connectivity as well as reducing traffic congestion. The projects, whose estimated cost is around ₹5,278 crore, will help develop the transport infrastructure of not only Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula but also of the adjoining states.
The infrastructure project consists of laying the foundations for the 31.23 km Zirakpur-Kurali Six Lane Greenfield Highway, laying the foundation stone for the 10.30 km Chandigarh Airport-Aerocity Greenfield Highway, and laying the 19.20 km Zirakpur Bypass. All these projects aim at rerouting the transit traffic on urban roads, thus alleviating congestion in the Tricity area.

Zirakpur-Kurali Greenfield Highway will create an excellent corridor for commuters and commercial traffic as there will be no signals on this road connecting Mohali IT city with Kurali, thus creating a fast lane. On the other hand, Chandigarh Airport-Aerocity Greenfield Highway will serve the purpose of creating better connections for the passengers and business entities from Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport and Aerocity.
The planned construction of the Zirakpur Bypass has been envisioned to be a very significant element in reducing the traffic congestion of one of the busiest traffic routes in North India. Through the creation of this bypass, the movement of vehicles along the major highways linking Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Jammu & Kashmir can be diverted, thereby easing off the load on Chandigarh’s existing transport infrastructure.
It is believed that the new highway system will boost the efficiency of the logistics industry through more rapid transit of freight traffic through northern India. This improved connectivity will be of great help to industries, logistics companies, tourism sector, and real estate sector. This project is part of the vision of the government regarding construction of high capacity transport infrastructure.
