  • Reliance Industries will launch its solar PV module factory in 2025, aiming for 20 GW annual capacity.
  • This move supports India’s 2030 target of 500 GW non-fossil energy capacity, amid increased clean energy investments.
  • Reliance may become the world’s No. 2 solar PV producer outside China, contributing 14% of global non-China supply.

Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries will launch its solar photovoltaic modules factory this year, according to an executive.

"We are today building three bigger factories... in order to produce clean energy requirements," said Partha P Maitra, President, Strategy and Initiatives at Reliance Industries.

India has been working hard to achieve its clean energy goals after not meeting them in 2022. In the last year, the nation has increased its investments in the sector, yet must double its capacity expansions in the next five years to achieve its goal of 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, according to a report from Global Energy Monitor.

A report by Mercom India from March 2025 states that India increased its solar module capacity by 25.3 gigawatts GW in 2024, yet reliance on imports stayed elevated. Domestic production is anticipated to receive a surge as firms such as Reliance expand, in line with the government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) program.

Maitra stated that Reliance intends to ultimately expand module capacity to 20 GW annually. He mentioned that their factory for batteries and micro power electronics is set to begin operations next year.

"If it happens we will be the no. 2 solar PV producer in the world. We will produce roughly 14% of total solar PV modules outside China," the executive said.
