Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman meets Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov on October 30, 2026, to discuss bilateral trade and economic cooperation between the two countries. The meeting focuses on strengthening economic engagement and exploring opportunities to expand collaboration across key sectors, reflecting continued efforts by New Delhi and Moscow to deepen their longstanding partnership.

The discussions take place amid renewed efforts by both countries to increase bilateral trade and investment. India and Russia have set a target of raising annual bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030, alongside a goal of achieving $50 billion in two-way investments. Several sectors offer opportunities to strengthen commercial engagement, including pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, chemicals, textiles, food products, marine products and automotive components. India is seeking to expand exports in these areas and address the existing imbalance in bilateral trade. Greater participation by businesses from both countries is expected to support this effort and create new investment opportunities.

Financial cooperation also remains an important part of the bilateral economic agenda. Both countries are working to improve payment mechanisms and facilitate trade settlements in national currencies. These arrangements aim to reduce transaction-related challenges and support smoother commercial exchanges. India and Russia are also advancing discussions on a Bilateral Investment Treaty to provide greater legal certainty and encourage investment flows between the two economies.

Connectivity and logistics form another important area of cooperation. Projects such as the International North-South Transport Corridor and the Chennai-Vladivostok maritime corridor are expected to strengthen trade routes and improve cargo movement between the countries. India is also engaging with the Eurasian Economic Union on a proposed free trade agreement to widen market access and create additional opportunities for exporters and businesses.
