Tata Power and BPCL have signed a ₹250 crore MoU to develop 110 kV power infrastructure supplying 90 MW to BPCL’s ₹14,203 crore PRFCCU project at its Mumbai Refinery.

Tata Power has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to develop 110 kV power infrastructure for BPCL’s Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) project at its Mumbai Refinery. The proposed infrastructure involves a combined investment of approximately ₹250 crore and is designed to meet the facility’s estimated electricity requirement of 90 megawatts (MW).

Under the agreement, Tata Power will provide 110 kV grid connectivity and oversee the design and development of the associated power infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed over approximately 24 months, subject to regulatory approvals and the achievement of project milestones. The dedicated power connection is intended to support the refinery unit’s electricity needs and strengthen the reliability of its operations.

BPCL’s PRFCCU project has a processing capacity of three million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and an estimated investment of ₹14,203 crore. It is the company’s second-largest project currently under execution and the largest project undertaken at its Mumbai Refinery. The facility is intended to improve the recovery of higher-value products and support diversification into petrochemicals.

The power infrastructure agreement also forms part of broader efforts to strengthen electricity transmission capacity in Mumbai’s Trombay industrial area. The region serves major industrial consumers, making reliable high-voltage connectivity important for supporting existing operations and anticipated growth in electricity demand.

Tata Power has also outlined plans to develop a 400 kV transmission facility at Trombay over the next five years. The proposed expansion is expected to enhance power evacuation capacity and reinforce the grid serving Mumbai’s industrial and commercial sectors.

The collaboration reflects the growing requirement for dedicated power infrastructure to support large industrial projects, particularly in energy-intensive sectors such as refining and petrochemicals. For BPCL, the new connection is intended to meet the PRFCCU facility’s power needs, while Tata Power’s involvement expands its role in industrial transmission and infrastructure development.

The project’s implementation will depend on the completion of approvals, infrastructure development and commissioning milestones. Once completed, the power connection is expected to support BPCL’s refinery expansion while contributing to the strengthening of Mumbai’s electricity network.
